http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/Matrix

1.something that constitutes the place or point from which something else originates, takes form, or develops: The Greco-Roman world was the matrix for Western civilization.

I think its rather baffling the during the movies the idea was to destroy the matrix and yet if you follow the definition they effectively wanted to destroy the place that they came from.

Any thoughts on this?

Yep.  The Wachowskis have said that there's a lot of word play and multiple meanings in the trilogy.  Most (if not all) of the names were picked because they had numerous interpretations.

In the old Wachowskis chat, one person asked if "the Matrix" was a reference to the "mitochondrial matrix" located in cells, which are responsible for creating energy in human beings.  The Wachowskis responded, talking about the multiple meanings and word play in the movie, and then went on to mention other definitions of the word, such as "the mathematical definition of the use of matrix, or the use of it in terms of a woman's womb".[color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"][color="#ffffff"]

Yeah definitely used for multiple meanings. Gibson also coined the use of "the Matrix" in reference to cyberspace in Neuromancer back the 80s. We got the word from the latin for womb.

In school we learned how to make a repeating roster of plans, which was called a matrix. I found that always very fitting to the reason behind naming the Matrix, "Matrix": A repeating schedule of plans.

Here are a lot of definitions of the word, most fit quite well in to the story too.

That's probably the best reason behind naming it the "Matrix". SMILEY

I'm doing discrete maths at the moment and the matrices I'm studying are ones made from spanning trees like this one. Computers use grids to understand these trees and can use algorithms like Prim's algorithm to find the minimum spanning tree. I suppose it's a bit like the Matrix with nodes representing programs and the vertices representing the links between the programs.
