Essay #2 “Write on any topic of importance to you?” By Samy Ramadan
On March 22, a couple of years ago, my life took a new path, a path I was both eager to take and very glad I did. That is the date when the best Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game called The Matrix Online was released. The game is set in the fictional universe of The Matrix and continues the story told in the Matrix series. Those are also some of the best movies out on the market. The three Matrix movies (The Matrix [1999], The Matrix Reloaded [2003], The Matrix Revolutions [2003]) are all movies that set new limits to how we visualize the world today and how we perceive how life actually is run. If closely analyzed the Matrix series have many psychological and philosophical aspects that most people seem to overlook as they enjoy the action packed and graphically pleasing movie.
Anyways, you’re probably thinking, “Who would write about an online game?” Well, to tell you the truth, I would. The Matrix Online is very important to me and has helped me in numerous amount of ways that no other item or person could. Whenever I feel sorrowful, distressed, or ill-tempered I hop on The Matrix Online and enter a world most people don’t know about. It is a world that can be very calming and soothing, and that’s exactly why I log on and play. Most of the people on The Matrix Online play for the same reasons as I do, because it’s comforting and because it’s a place where you can let go of everything that is happening in the real world and immerse yourself into a fantasy without worrying what people will think about you, what is going to happen the next day, and what has happened in the past. My parents’ divorce was a tough one. Until and after the divorce happened, all that I heard in my house was screaming. The only way that I could escape the pain and the misery was to enter a peaceful world. That peaceful place for me is The Matrix Online. Almost everyone there is friendly and has a story similar to mine as to why they play the Matrix. For those numerous weeks of turmoil and chaos in my house, I would be in my room peacefully immersing myself into a worriless-universe. It’s not like I am obsessed with the game, it’s just that The Matrix Online is the only diversion that could make me feel better and that could make me forget about everything that was happening at home.
I still play the game today, but for other reasons. As the years passed by I have matured greatly and am able to handle a lot more pressure than I once could. I rarely ever get distressed, angry, or furious, and the effects of the divorce are slowly wearing off. I now play the game as a pastime and as a way to entertain myself. I also keep playing to stay in touch with the hundreds of friends I made while playing during the rough times in my life. They were all there to help me through it, even more than anyone could in real life. Without them I would not have been able to get through the divorce and move on. That is why the Matrix Online is a topic of great importance to me. It is a fact of life that computers are now part of people’s lives and maybe one day I’ll help create a virtual world where people can escape reality for a moment at the click of a button.
