#36300111015 12/03/2006 16:55:01 Thoughts on Rare Items

I'm curious to see what you guys think about rare items about now.  I think that we've learned a bit from the Assassin's Mask, so I'm going to give my opinion and I'd really like to see what you guys think.

I personally am all in favor of having rare items that only a select few players can have.  I think the Assassin's mask was a great think to give to the community.  Some people complain that the way it was given was unfair (It was given to those who had the last hit on the Assassin.)  Personally, I think that was great because any player had a chance of getting the mask, but those at higher levels who did higher damage had a higher chance.

After the masks were given out, there was argument that those who had the mask had an advantage in PVP.  My response is: of course they did, that's one reason the item was good!  In my opinion there are 2 ways to fix the problem.

 1) Get rid of Rare items.  I really think this is a lame approach.  Rare items are fun, and it gives players something to compete for.
 2) Give out more, varried Rare items.  Things like "Cryptos' Bandana" and "Agent Pace's Brooch" and "Anome's Sunglasses" are a few items that could be rewarded to players who did especially well in accomplishing coals of major events.  I realize that we don't have the same World Events anymore (which I think should be brought back but I udnerstand the short staff problem) but these items could surely still be distributed evenly among the servers.

I don't know if we can change anything, but I'd like to hear your opinions based on what I've said.

They're great for when I'm still playing a year from now and everyone else is a newbie. Then everyone can send me a tell every other minute asking me "WHERE U GET SECURITY SHIRT??" or "yo dood wat vender sells that mask" or "omg how u get those gloves???"

Yea this is a problem, but /ignore still works.  I think if there were more rare items (and a larger variety of clothing options in general) people wouldn't notie so much.  If people were more spread out than Mara C, you could avoid the noobs altogether, but thats another story.

And if you really didn't want it, I'm sure you could get rid of it.

I think there needs to be more rare items, but a decent way of getting them needs to be thought up. I think during an event on Recursion, the Oracle showed up and gave cookies to those who did the most damage during the event, which seems more fair then the last hit gets the prize deal.

Or, "D00d, whered u get that kewl gun?"

I am up for really really rare items, the only problem really i had with the assassin mask was the way it was obtained, it was based on who had last hit and not who did the most damage like things are now days. The devs talk about not wanting to make any uber items cause that is what everyone will wear or use but i say if you make it really really hard to get and it is rare enough then it is totally fine. Just like in WoW at end game you got all the raid gear and everyone wears that if they can ever get to the point of obtaining them all and you having them is something to brag about.

Actually, I was referring to Cap0ne's FM-1500 as an addendum to his list of questions that he commonly receives, as he does seem to have the largest collection of rare and unique items, and deservedly so.

agreed, cap's collection of gear gets me wet.

i think rare items shouldn't be in the game if everyone can not get them. I, we all pay $15 a month, why should only a few get rare items. I can understand if they are a past event items and aren't attainable(only through purchase). If these items help this player more in pvp,pve or RP then i feel it unbalances the game. Theres only 2 rare items in the game and thats the assassins masks and agent gun which is only given to machines and is not tradeable, seems that item is for favortism if ya ask me, where are the other orgs special favortism items. I feel as if im left out of getting my moneys worth and cheated in pvp,  if these items are not attainable by everyone at the current time they are available.

So go ahead and say well you should have been smarter and figured out how to get it or maybe you just suck. it helps the economy, in which it doesnt, blah blah blah.

Thats what i liked about swg, every item was available to get by everyone else, you just had to work for it.

You kinda answered your question in the opening sentience. We all pay $15 a month so we are all on even footing. Rare items that are passed out also give a driving force to partisipate in an event as it offers proof that you were there and for a moment all eyes were on you. At the core its a bragging right but its one that everyone aims for. If everyone could get every item in the game and only had to work for it then what would be the point of some of the more major events? What would the significance of say an agent giving an machine operative a gun if I a merv operative could code up that same make and model?

i didnt ask a question. we all pay 15 a month, so we all should get the items at the time they are attainable. To participate in an event is to participate and say you were there. If everyone there got the item then hey i wouldnt have a problem. but to say hey look at me im a superstar because i have an item is just ego based. As far as  the agent gun, i never said every person in the game should get one but i do believe if your going to give an item like that to an org, then they should have an item for every org that is used for pvp(not including the bluepill for cyphs). so like i said those items are favortism items atm, since i know of only one person with one on vector.

So here is what i ask why should i pay $15 a month to not get an item that makes you better in pvp, pve or RP.

Because I'm paying the same $15 a month and so is everyone one else. As I said earlyer, because everyone is paying the same amount to play this game there is no "oh I am paying more so I should get a rare item" going about. You mentioned earlyer that all items should be made available but that players should work for them. In many ways this is the same case for the rare items, such as the 1500 mag. A character comes on, tells a group to go and do such and such, the most active members get the weapon as a prize. They worked to get that rare item. It was not handed to them just for being there or because the developers favored them over someone one else.

It's only ego-based if you make it ego-based. Lots of players who earned their rewards for hard work or extra effort don't flaunt the fact. Cap0ne is an excellent example.

Every game of this genre has veteran and expert player rewards. MxO is no different. Giving everyone a special rare item no longer makes it rare, or special.

and you miss the whole point. who cares if you started yesterday or at launch, if you're there and paying at the time it is available then everyone should have the chance to get it. YES THEY WORK FOR IT THEY DID  WHAT IS NECASSARY TO GET IT, AS IN WORKED FOR IT, as in ok here is what i have to do to get it. not ok if im here and i get the last hit or i do the most dmg or i was here 1st i can maybe get this item. SO READ CAREFULLY, WHY SHOULD I PAY 15 A MONTH TO NOT GET IT.

The flit gun did roughly equal damage to the Assassin no matter what level you were. Example, Riac was level 23 when she got the mask.
