EPN = E Pluribus Neo (subgroup of Zion)
CYPH = Cypherites (subgroup of the Machines)

To elaborate, EPN (E Pluribus Neo) are a group that are often considered extremists by others. If I'm not mistaken, their goal is to awaken everyone from the simulation, or at least give them all the choice to be awakened. They are sort of a religious sect based around Neo.
The Cypherites are a counter group to the EPN, they want to go back to 'sleep' in the simulation. The "ignorance is bliss" philosophy.

Plus your faction had to answer wierd Riddles in order to become a member.

hmm ok well here is my veiw of em
EPN - complete hypocritical BS, they want to honour neo's memory by destroying the truce when neo gave his own life for the truce to be formed, so they are destroying the truce by their terrorist activities.
CYPH - they want to return to their pods but they don't only wanna go they wanna bring every other redpill down with them, tryin to force their veiws upon the rest of us.

You think that there'll ever be a Merovingian splinter group?
There's been a lot of interesting talk on this, and chance's are if there was, it would either:
-A splinter Ookami group
-A splinter Persohpne group
The others EPN and cyph are splinter of zion and machine so it makes sense if they eventually have a merv splinter, though, at this point in the strory (with anome) i dont think there will be one, anytime soon
Hope that helps!

Epn dosent force its views on anyone it offers the option of the redpill to anyone who wants it or feels ready, unlike zion who only offer it to those they think are ready.
also some people conviently forget that cypherites are also considered extremists by the machines as their actions also threaten the truce, and who could forget the sleepwalkers fiasco, although some epn members also detonated codebombs, they too were an extremist group, not connected with the main.
Each group had their own story line with critical missions. I believe if you run the archive missions you can still get an idea of how both groups came into being.
