Small Router Question.

#36300070194 10/12/2006 01:49:33 Small Router Question.
From one of Phi's old topics he lists:

TCP range: 10000 to 11000 (incoming & outgoing traffic)UDP range: 10000 to 11000 (incoming & outgoing traffic)TCP port: 7030 (outgoing traffic)UDP port: 9700 (outgoing traffic)

As ports and ranges to "open" on a router. Now while I can open up ports (both TCP and UDP) on my router, I haven't the foggiest how you go about opening an entire range. Is this an option generally found on US routers? (Mine is Japanese which may then explain why it doesn't have the option) or am I missing something else?

As I have finally got an OS back on my laptop I'm once again able to access my router firmware, so I was thinking if I could try setting these ranges in the hope of helping reduce the constant high latancy I have in game.

Should be an option somewhere in the router to allow it.

Mine's a belkin one and allows a range of ports to be entered as in the screenshot.

So it definately should be somewhere, just a matter of finding it.

Yeah, doesn't appear to exist on Japanese routers. =( I can only enter a specific port, it doesn't have any page/input area or what-have-you for ranges. And yeah, I tried to put a range in the normal port dialog box too, it doesn't like it and throws up an error.

If you are unable to configure the router you should contact the router's maker for more detailed instructions.

Some routers (like CISCO routers etc...) you have to specify ranges like so:

TCP port 9999 allow GT (GT=greater than)
TCP port 11000 deny GT

which allows ports greater than 9999 (10000) and up, but blocks them from 11001 and up.

What is the make and model of your router? I'll see if I can post how to fix.

Note: SOE staff can not and will not help with router configs as it is not a product they supply, and so can't offer advice without being liable should a user kill their hardware due to bad advice.
I, on the other hand, am not an SOE employee and love telling people what they're doing wrong. SMILEY

Yeah I know. Just one small problem, I can't track down the maker. The provider (YahooBB!) isn't very helpful when it comes to opening ports - they prefer to have them all blocked. And as with most Japanese hardware of this type, there is basically no online information (I've searched countless times in both English and Japanese, but nowt.) As a sign of how bad things are, I had to actually get the router IP number from a forum created by foreign language teachers here in Japan! But even they can't figure out the port range thing =(.

Meh. I'll drag the laptop over to the router again and take some screenies of the various options I have. Perhaps one of you will spot something I've missed (or more likely I will when I translate it into English).

I understand that too, but I know you and Jeffers are around here a lot =D. But like I say, the entire thing is in Japanese so you'll have your work cut out for you even if I could track down a number. I can give you the Wireless adapter information, but I don't think it'll have any connection to the router at all.

Wohoo another player in Japan SMILEY.  Is there a firmware update that allows ranges?

It just so happens that my brother teaches Japanese (Kanji mostly) and can read it quite fluently... If I have trouble I'll get him to help me SMILEY

Not that I know of, the router basically updates its own firmware from time to time. Still nice to know there are other players here too =D

Phi, that's pretty good too. I may mis-translate something when I have a look at it tomorrow (was unable to today). Due to where the router is and where my PC is, it's not a very easy thing to look at U_U. But that's a problem down to the layout of my house and unfortunately I am unable to get a second line run in to the room with the PC.

I guess also going from 1 gig to perhaps 2 gigs of system memory may help a tiny bit on the graphics end too.

Oh, another related question of sorts, is there any way to "defrag" the swap file without deleting and remaking it? (Which I don't think actually helps). Executive Diskeeper is supposed to be able to do that, but the English version I use won't do anything like that with a Japanese OS due to language differences in the boot sequence.

Did a bit of searching for YahooBB and Port Forwarding and noticed a lot of similar requests to yours Chuui, but non of them had a solution. One page did have a link to an english pdf manual, but the download had expired so I couldn't check it.

Maybe try emailing YahooBB Tech Support and see if they can help out?

Also did a quick search for page file defragging and came across this little utility linked from a forum. Never used it so I can't tell you whether it's any good or not but maybe give it a shot and see how you come on?

My router has a default setting to check for firmware updates, however after using it 4 days it didn't.  I might not have waited long enough, although most products check for updates after installation.

Jeffers, yeah YahooBB! Japan are dead against helping with that sorta thing. They assume every one will just use them to grab torrents or use Winny (I guess that's the Japanese version of Napster or sommat). And as Winny has a lot of bad press over here as it usually gets exploited with virii to take over PCs, anything that's seen as being helpful to downloading mass data is... "discouraged" as it were. I'm going to check out the utility you linked to now too.

I don't think there is anything phi can't do.

I'm back from Hiatus! I had to install a server... took a few days. (I get to fly up to Sydney next week and install it on site)

Chuui, could you perhaps post a photo or two of the router, in particular could you post a photo of the label on the bottom of it. What I'm after is things like the model and serial number.
