I posted this topic along time ago but never really got a good strong answer.

My question is this: When Neo makes his phonecall at the end of the first matrix who is he talking to? Ive always wondered this. If he is talking to the machines what machine?

Just to remind everyone what he said:

He is talking to all machines to let them know that he is going to awaken more bluepills so they can be in control of their own lives and not controlled by them whether they like it or not.

It makes complete sense that he's talking to agents. The line trace that failed was a way to tell the audience that the machines were indeed listening to what he had to say. After all, a very similar scene occurred at the beginning, where agents tapped the phone at the Heart O' the City Hotel.

always thought he was talking to the 'network'. Like hacking the Machine Mobile PA system or something to that effect.

Hardlines are connections both to the real world and The Source. He is talking to the "Machine" as a whole, the system itself, in essence, The Source.
