Goodbye, old friend - Vector - 4/18/06

The Watchmaker was a program designed to keep the Matrix in sync. Not too long ago, he was attacked, and vital portions of his code stolen. Human operatives banded together to recapture his code, and repair him. He rewarded them, but I have a feeling that many of them did it for a reason he might not have understood; they did it out of the kindness of their hearts. They'd grown attached to this strange shirtless fellow who sat around Debir Court, muttering conundrums.

The Exile program Grisaille sought to take take over the position his "father," Mr. Black, held in the Exile underworld. Using timing code stolen from the Watchmaker, Grisaille constructed a virus that would terminate Mr. Black's program.

The Watchmaker sought to save Mr. Black, in order to preserve the harmony of the system. This noble act exceeded his own programming. By strict Machine definitions, the Watchmaker had become a rogue program. Even as operatives helping the Watchmaker tracked down and eliminated the program carrying the fatal virus in Club Succubus, the Machine was scheduling the Watchmaker's deletion.

I found him in Debir Court, surrounded by his supportive friends. In a way, he knew what was coming, but he had convinced himself that the System would spare him, since he had operated only to preserve it.

But the System is not designed to make exceptions. Agent Harris followed his orders strictly, and the Watchmaker perished, surrounded by his friends, who risked their own lives trying to save him.

Goodbye, old friend. You earned what few programs have: love. You will not be forgotten.

I can't blame the machines for doing the only thing they know. All I can do is Grieve for a machine than went beyond that.

Watchmaker, I will never forget you. I may always keep all those e-mails in my inbox, to remind me of the great time I had trying to find your attacker. It was a thrill to jack in every day and find that Mercury had extracted more data. You will be missed. I'm sorry it had to be this way...

This was a very well thought out event, ML was very glad to participate. We hope it continues in another chapter...

We Exilists value sentient life, and it is such a terrible shame that once you gained sentience....evolved if you will...the Machines reverted to their heartless ways.

H'mm, I have to say I'm not a little disappointed by the actions of Agent Harris and his superiors. Gray will be hearing from me about this, though I'm not sure what good it'll do.
