Thinking about becoming a evil darth ruthless villain of the Matrix and not too sure how to start? Here are quick tips based on my experience.
IC and OOC
Players are easily offended or don't notice someone being in character. I strongly advise to let players around you that you are just having fun.
Right and Wrong
Some know they are wrong and do it deliberately, enjoying the sense of fear and pain they cause others (like me hehe) don't understand or believe in right and wrong and do what they have to do. It really depends on the nature and background of your character.
Personality
Very important. Plan your behaviour carefully and stick to it. Examples are cold blooded, psychotic/mad, vicious, classy/out of touch, thug/gangster, bossy, relentless or working behind the scenes. It should be reflected in the way you talk, act and walk.
Setting targets
Whether its long term or short term (enslaving every red pill , assassination..) stick to it and work hard to achieve it. Unless you are just a minion following orders, focus on one or two objectives at a time. Your plans are part of your identity, changing too often only hurts your reputation.
What can a villain do in the Matrix
The list is long! Kidnappings, hostage situation, theft, torture, aggression, assassination, killings, spying/stalking, mind control...Obviously you will need cooperation and planning. You can target red pills, exiles, blue pills, installations, buildings...
Start by getting your name and intentions recognized, this requires meeting and rping with a lot of people. Once players are familiar with your characters move on to small then large scale player events.
Ways to approach rp situations
It really depends on your style and the person you target. I prefer a IC approach rather than the OOC "can I kidnap you, meet me there ok?" scripted line.
I would simply take it slowly. Using this kidnapping example, I would invite the person to some secret location then start the usual villain speech and leave opportunities for the player to escape or attack me. I will deliberately make IC mistakes allowing a more open ended situation. It takes some practice, but you don't have to be IC all the time, you can let the players know their options. If you require your character to succeed, cooperate with the players around you or they may not enjoy the story.
Also important to update the community in forums!
Predictability
I think that it is important for good rp. If players know about your character behaviour and pattern, that helps them creating situations for your story. If your rp is good, people will try to stop you and it's good to give them something to work with.
Having said that, unpredictable characters are interesting as well but harder for others to interact and the story is pretty much on your own terms.
Remember that roleplaying isnt about winning or losing, it's about creating interesting scenarios and having fun
