Susannah Dean was formerly known as Odetta Susannah Holmes. She is daughter to a renowned dentist responsible for many inventions in his field. At age 6, Odetta (Susannah) was struck by a brick. It was labeled as an accident at the time, however, documentation confirms that criminal activity was involved.
In theory, this is what started a split in Odetta's personality. Odetta's main conscience would blackout, and a more violent personality would take over. This personality actually took on a title and mind of her own and went by the name Detta Walker.
As Odetta got older, Detta became more coniving and dangerous. Starting at the age of 14, Detta would apparently seduce adult Caucasion men at bars and other public hangouts of the like. But she would alledgedly never go all the way with any of her partners. Instead she would cruelly tease them and stop them before any intercourse took place. The end of this apparent act would be signaled by Detta laughing in the faces of the men, followed by verbal and/or physical abuse from the male.
Detta has also been guilty of petty theft, stealing "costume" jewelry and other rather cheep paraphanelia, all for the apparent sake of stealing.
According to Susannah and documentation, the Odetta and Detta personalities did not have any memory or awareness of each other.
At the age of 21, Odetta was pushed in front of a rushing subway vehicle, alledgedly by the same perpetrator who dropped ("pushed") a brick on Odetta in her early childhood years. This did not help any matters with the mps. In fact, the mps only got stronger and more dangerous especially to the Odetta's person.
It is in another cheep department store that Susannah's apparent "world traveling" started. It is here that she meets Roland (a gunslinger from a world that is quite different from ours, called Mid World, but with many alarming similarities. It is a world that seems to resemble our depictions of the "Old West", yet there are odd characters and units and environments from this world that make it different).

For a time, while Odetta remains in Mid World, the multiple personality syndrome remains a problem and the Detta personality becomes a danger to the entire group. (Before Roland pulls Susannah into his world, he pulls another named Eddie Dean from a world that resembles our depiction of 1984). Eventually, a physical split happens, as Odetta and Detta become more physical bodies. It is here, at this point and time that the merge happens. Odetta and Detta embrace, forming one personality: Susannah.
The mps remains only with slight symptoms. The Odetta personality seems to be the one more in control, yet observors point out that they often see traces of the Detta personality. The desired outcome has been achieved. Susannah has full awareness of both personalities.
What lies ahead for the group is a journey to a dark tower. To help Roland find this object, the newcomers to MidWorld (Susannah, Eddie, and later a boy named Jake, and a pet animal resembling a racoon/dog named Oy) agree to go with Roland. Eddie (of whom Susannah falls in love with and marries, taking his last name Dean), Jake, and Oy all have met their apparent deaths somewhere near the end of the journey. Susannah however has chosen to leave Roland before he gets to the Dark Tower.
In interviews, Susannah said it is not her place to know or see what the Dark Tower is or what happens to those who see or come in contact with it. Therefore, although, she has reluctantly read the entire account of her story written by Stephen King, she has yet to have read Mr. King's "Coda" ending. Since this file has been reviewed by the subject (as required by law), Zion Command has chosen to withold information provided in the Coda, and have placed it in a more confidential file. How Susannah steps into our world is a bit alarming. Readers of the last volume of the Dark Tower series, observe that a door on the side of Mid World was made, and Susannah stepped through it...
...and into our world. According to Machine documentation, Susannah arrived and fainted (possibly due to shock of observing the harsh environment of the World of the Real). The Door she opened up and came through seemed to have appeared from nowhere for no apparent reason. This is oddly the very description given to us by Machine high command. We have no real reason to disbelieve them.
The Machines claim that the door is now closed and to our current knowledge the Machines have tried to open it and are possibly still trying. They have not and maybe will not allow us any access to this door that appeared in the real world.
Now, Susannah has no recollection of this event. In fact, what Susannah remembers happening is what is written in the Book 7 of Stephen King's Dark Tower series. Susannah comes through the door and is greeted by two individuals who closely resemble the Eddie Dean and Jake Chambers that she traveled with on the quest for the Dark Tower. We, as well as Susannah, now know that those two units were merely programs.
The Machines attempted to slowly move Susannah away from her memories of the Dark Tower quest. And they did this by still allowing Susannah to pass through a door (albeit fake) in the Matrix and briefly have a memory of what happened with Roland. Yet, making her forget all about it as time went on. For a while this attempt worked, but what started making Susannah aware of the Matrix, was that by experimentation the machines programmed Susannah's residual self image with legs.
The Machines hoped for Susannah to not be aware of this new addition, but failed to factor in Susannah's still existing multiple personality syndrome (albeit suppressed and for all intents and purposes cured, but... still there nonetheless). Susannah awoke to find she had legs and started to "wake up".
The Oracle, who had been keeping an eye on Susannah, became aware of this incident.
And this is where a rather odd event happens. Susannah is not offered any red or blue pill, instead in her meeting with the Oracle, Susannah leaves through a door and into her real world body. The real world body of course still has no legs below the knees. Zion Medical has given Susannah access to a wheelchair. She has refused any prosthetic operations. However, Susannah has agreed to lend her abilities and training as a Gunslinger to be an Operative for Zion. And she has agreed to let her residual self image be programmed with legs.
Susannah possesses real world training as a Gunslinger. However, she still went through training on how to use this in the Matrix, as well as other basic operative training such as basic martial arts, hyperjumping, and reading code (she did this last rather reluctantly, complaining that she does not like computers). Susannah has also decided to go through specific spy training. Please refer to the strengths and weaknesses section of this file.
