It all depends on the stories. If me and my faction started writing a
story and would like to share it on the forums, a random person
introducing himself in the middle of it wouldn't be a good idea,
because you would be disrupting the current story. Some RP threads are
meant to have many people contributing in it, but most aren't. My best
trick would be to follow the actual story on the forum, and locate it's
actors in game, since this is were the real action is going. Find
yourself a good idea on how you could contribute to the story,
introduce yourself, in character if possible, and take part in the
story.

Another hint I could give you is to be on the look out for new stories.
Many people are interrested in having different stories than those
actually played, and they will definetly need some players in it. It's
easier to enter in a room when it's door is wide open than if you got
to crack it open.

Finally, there's no easy way to be part of a story : no one will run
after you so you can play in their story. However, I will give you the
best secret I give to new roleplayers : a good roleplayer is someone
that listen more than he talks.

About the listening part... I'm not talking listening such as sitting
idle and listening. It's more related to the theater concept of
listening. Analyzing what's happening and acting in consequence. You
can talk, but you should put more importance into understanding what
the other players have to say than what you want to say. That's the
best way to learn what could be your place in the story.
