Well, in case anyone's wondered why I haven't been in game since Monday, there's a reason: I just installed Morrowind.

Famous last words, I'm sure.

The game itself wouldn't normally be enough to keep me away from MxO... however, it happens to come with a little something called The Elder Scrolls Construction Set. It's essentially a development kit, or whatever you call it, for the game. It lets you add, remove, or modify any building, landscape, person, or item in the game. There's also the fact that the game world is apparently infinite in size. This means that, given enough time, one could conceivably build an entirely different world, as big as they wanted, essentially making a totally new game with the Morrowind engine.

It just so happens that I've been writing a still-unpublished series of novels that take place in an imaginary medieval world of mine, and the only times I've ever been able to see it myself have been when I draw illustrations or when I made a simple 2-D top-down game in RPG Maker 2000 back in high school. It also just so happens that Morrowind has nearly the exact same engine that I had envisioned back in 6th grade when I had the idea for making a game that takes place in this world: an immense landscape without the usual cramped little villages and tiny little forests, where you can just wander off and whip out your sword and kill a thief out in the woods whenever you want.

It also happens to be in 3-D.

So, now, behold--the before and after:

It's beyond anything I ever hoped to see in reality of my ideas so soon. I'm not sure if Morrowind will be able to handle the full load of content I have planned, but so far it's exactly what I wanted: first-person sword fighting and exploration, the ability to read books, and the kind of thing where people react directly to your actions. You can swipe things from people and they actually get mad, and generic NPCs cry for help if you attack them (or fight back).

I also now have a renewed sense of appreciation for the MxO development team. It took me about five days to make a single Inn. You guys built a city. Even if a lot of it is cookie-cutter, you guys deserve a much bigger pat on the back than we could ever give.
