I guess everybody knows Serj Tankian's deep growl mode -- in "Cigaro", "Prison Song", "Needles" and "X", aswell as lots of times in Self Titled. It doesn't really sound human, and I'd actually take them for distorted.
However, seeing as, in different songs from Self Titled ("War?", "P.L.U.C.K."), Tankian jumps from normal singing to this growl timbre very fast and fluently, just as he hops from standard voice to falsetto in other songs ("DDevil" f.e.), I start wondering if that's really the case.
Is that some clever technical trick (like quick mike mode switching), or is this metallic timbre actually Tankian's undistorted voice?
And while I'm at it: on Self Titled, you can sometimes hear a vibrating squeal sounds by Tankian -- like in "Mind" (2x, in the instrumental verse intros) or "CUBErt". The squeal itself is most certainly real, but the vibration aswell? Or a technical volume trick?
