I'm an avid fan of orchestral music, and have taken to acquiring
several cinematic scores. This is somewhat a part of my ongoing search
for awesome music to use in a MXO video production... but nonetheless I
appreciate good music.
I've sampled a large quantity of movie scores and trailer music, and
these are my favorites at the moment. If you're interested, here's what
I'd recommend checking out. If you know of any similar music, or have
recommendations to make, by all means post!
V For Vendetta OST - "Valerie" and "Evey Reborn" aren't action cues,
but they're so emotional that they make the hair on my neck just stand
right up. And then there's always "Knives and Bullets (And Cannons
Too)" which, including the 1812 Overture, is just chock full of
powerfull actiony goodness.
The Batman Begins soundtrack has this great paranoid citylike feel to
it, and Hans Zimmer is typically a great composer. "Nycteris,"
"Barbastella," and "Molussus" are great tracks. Hans Zimmer has
produced a number of great soundtracks, like...
The Gladiator OST... not very action oriented, but some great songs.
"Sorrow" is very moving. Another great Zimmer score is "The Last
Samurai," "Ronin" and "Taken" are very intense action tracks.
The Constantine OST has a very mysterious sound to it, considering the
movie deals with supernatural elements. I love the fight music where
the holy water descends from the sprinklers, and other cues are great
as well.
Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - great special effects, mediocre
plot, GREAT soundtrack. I highly recommend checking this out, the
choral work is simply beautiful.
Obviously, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park,
and The Matrix Trilogy are included - I don't think much is needed in
terms of explanation.
Michael Giachinno's scores for "Alias" and "Lost" are very good. The
Rambaldi and Irina Derevko motifs are very good, and Lost's atmospheric
wonderfullness makes the show very interesting.
In terms of non-movie orchestral music, I really like Carl Orff's
"Carmina Burana", and Verdi's "Dies Irae," in addition to Wagner's
"Ride of the Valkyries," Strauss's "Sprach Zathustra," and Holst's
"Mars" and "Saturn." Another great group is E.S. Posthumus - I have
their "Unearthed" CD, which is frequently encountered in my playlists.
Also, Rob Dougan's "Furious Angels" album features some great
instrumental and orchestral work. Trailer specific music companies can
produce some great songs too, Immediate Music, X-Ray Dog Music, and
others have some great renditions of Mozart's "Lacrimosa" from
"Requiem," and the "Gothic Power" cue by Christopher Field. Another top
pick is Clint Mansell's "Lux Aeterna," which is a remake of a trailer
song from "Requiem for a Dream."
Some video games have great scores as well. The Elder Scrolls series
has always featured great music - the title themes for Morrowind and
Oblivion are highly recommended, as is the music from Oblivion's
opening cinematic. World of Warcraft's main title is very intense also,
and a trailer song for Myst IV is one of my favorite tracks. A site
named OCRemix.org has done some remixes of great game songs and made
them even better, I HIGHLY recommend the Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and
Halo selections. Counting Advent Children as a game, well, One Winged
Angel has to be one of the coolest songs ever, and the rest of the
tracks are astounding as well.
So... yeah. Check this stuff out if you're interested, and post suggestions/recommendations
