Ok here is somethingthing interesting to think about. . . does AI
(Artifical Intellegence) need to have emotions to be free thinking?. .
. I got into an debate with someone about this today and was wondering
what you all thought.
technichally, Ai are free thinking, as much as we are. They have a set of options they can choose from, often randomly or weighed in by several factors, which is almost exactly what humans do when making decisions.
Just look at Deep Blue. it is 'free thinking', but only within a chess board's perimeter. That is what it percieves. We can only percieve that in front of us, putting us on a large and much more vivid chess board.
If I remember correctly the Turing test, that was supposed to check if AI were indeed free thinking AI, is based on the computer (AI) being able to convince the human performing the test that it is in fact a female human.
[This in turn was based on old game in which a man and woman would sit in different rooms and a group of people in yet another room, would send written questions to one or the other of the man and the woman, to try and work out from the answers they received, who was the woman]
Whether emotion is needed to prove if an AI is free thinking or not, would (at least for the Turing test) depend upon the questions asked.
An interesting book to read if not read already is 'The Age of Spiritual Machines' by Ray Kurzweil where he maps out the next 100 years for the advancement of AI, where he believes that machines will attain and then surpass the capabilities of the human brain and by 2099 there will be no clear distinction between humans and computers.
And a book I'm reading at the moment is the biography of science fiction writer Philip K **bleep** titled 'I am Alive and You Are Dead: A journey into the Mind of Philip K **bleep**' by Emmanuel Carrere, a fascinating read and mentions a bit about the Turing Test and how he used it for his book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'.
