we don't need plants to make oxygen. We ironically have machines that do that. The best example i can give is the space station. They don't have a Forrest up there, and it never comes down, and they don't have big air tanks transported up there. They use a machine that recycles the air. Also they did the with Apollo 13, the ship had a something wrong with it, and the oxygen was being depleted. So NASA had to come up with a way to recycle the air with a few bare necessities. So all in all it is possible to live without plants.

just thought of something else too, as it was said by morpheus, and others the time that we would spend after the war would be concentrated on cleaning up the surface, and i think if we put our minds to it, we could get rid of the whole dark sky business.  Then the light will come back, we'll plant vegetation again, and we'll be ok. Keep the faith.
