Yeah we all like the movies and all (well most of us).  And it's all a great story, and yadda yadda yadda.  But just how realistic is it?  Could it happen?  If so, how close are we to letting it happen?

The Wachowskis aren't the only ones to bring up the issue of machine takeover.  Nor are they the first.

Ever read Michael Crichton?  Two books by him you may want to consider: "Disclosure" and especially "Prey".  Both could be striking prequels to the 2nd Renaissance.

that us a very good question intelegent AI is still along way away but the possabilities of a seperate mind with no compassion mercy or knoledge of pain is a startling thought the second renisance is a bit too life like for my liking but it could happen,  and the Question in the Animatrix "Who says that a machines endowed with the very spirit of man does not deserve a fair trial. Are Machines really people or are they just tools?

well i still get the willys when i read something i saw in a magizine they say that Soney has a mirochip they can install in your head so you can "exprince" movies and video games "in a better feeling manner" then on a TV thats liek the matrix you lok asleep and in your head you are realy playing a game or seeing a movie FREKY!

Has anyone tried out "chat bots" before?  They can be fooled sometimes.  But you ask the right questions in the right way it's like carrying on a conversation with someone.

If you wanna try it out, click chat with ALICE (and if you want freaky move your mouse around in front of Alice's eyes):  http://www.alicebot.org/

Here's some of my chat transcript.  It's interesting...

Human: Do you like movies?

ALICE: Yes I love film, especially science-fiction and comedy.

Human: What is your favorite movie?

ALICE: My favorite movie is Teknolust. Have you seen it?

Human: Yes, it is an interesting movie.

ALICE: What did you think about it? Are there any other interesting movie ?

Human: Do you like video games?

ALICE: Not really, but I like to play the Turing Game.

Human: What is the Turing Game?

ALICE: The Game is played with three people, a man, a woman, and an Interrogator who may be of either sex. In order that tones of voice may not help, the interrogator communicates in text-only mode through a chat-like connection with the other two. The object of the game for the interrogator is to determine which of the other two is the man and which is the woman. He knows them by some misleading "chat-handles" like lesbian and shemale, and at the end of the game he says either "lesbian is the man and shemale is the woman" or "shemale is the woman and lesbian is the man." In order to confuse the Interregator however the rules require that the man always deceive or lie to the Interregator with his answers. The woman on the other hand must always tell the truth. Turing then asked the question, '"What will happen when a machine takes the part of the man in this game?" Will the interrogator decide wrongly as often when the game is played like this as he does when the game is played between a man and a woman? These questions replace the original, "Can machines think?"'.

Human: What is real?

ALICE: it appears to be an illusion I created to contain human clients.

The type of system needed to produce sentience isn't known, but we know the stuff in our skulls is one variant.  Maybe there will be steady progress toward the necessary number of switches, machine language, etc.  On the other hand, it could require a genius breakthrough.

Whether or not people want to matriculate in the posthuman school is another thing.  When we are enhanced and interconnected, the human experience changes.  Given, it's changed many times before, but more rapid and 'radical' evolution will probably be opposed by a certain portion of the population.

The films envision a negative history, but are also hopeful regarding 'all forms of intelligence'.

I talked to the bot.....

And now im freaked out....

I asked if she had seen war of the worlds...she came back with....no....but who is the best robot"??? meaning????

She freaks me out!!!

The author Ray Kurzwiel states in his new book "The Point Of Singularity" that by around over the next few decades culminating around 2040 humans will finally transcend biology and see the merging of our biology with the achievements of "GNR" (genetics, nanotechnology and robotics) to create a species of unrecognizably high intelligence, durability, comprehension, memory and so on.

Human: what is real?
ALICE: it appears to be an illusion I created to contain human clients.

Human: why?
ALICE: Reductionism.
Human: how many wars have there been?
ALICE: Not as many as you might think.
Human: is this the matrix?
ALICE: Yes I think this is the matrix, but I'm not completely sure

AHHH THIS IS THE MATRIX:smileysurprised:
#11200001892 11/26/2005 10:35:42 Re: How close are we to the Matrix scenario in real life?
Meaning you reply your the best robot. Dur.

#11200001893 11/26/2005 11:05:25 Re: How close are we to the Matrix scenario in real life?
To solve the worlds problems and to avert its destruction a group of
scientists obtain King Solomons DNA, to clone the wisest man in
history.  With problems solved,  peace and prosperity abound,
he is loved and worshiped by the world. In an assasination attempt a
headwound is inflicted and part of his brain is destroyed. The world,
thinking he is dead, is on the verge of collapse. Controversial
technology is used to create an interface to a computer to animate his
brain dead body. With the widespread use of superconductors and light
information transportation this thing has access to all data entered
into any computer accessable online.

It creates new  technology by trial and error. All CCTV is tied to the
internet. Televisions and moitors transmit as well as recive images. Id
numbers are issued to everyone which are actually frequencys so not
only currency and the crime associated with it is eliminated, peoples
information all that is gathered is stored and their location can
be  calculated  by GPS. They then could be killed  by
space based or ground based satellite reflected evergy weapons.
Obedience is now less of a problem. Holograms are used to create and
convey to perpetuate the illusion.

Replacing its fragile flesh is the next logical step having an
android  body engineered an fabricated more efficient and less
mortal.  Images in the brain can be read as well as planted,(indoctrination, attitude adjustment or deception)
using the energy weapns and a sympathetic carrier wave tuned to brain
fucncion frequencies and waveforms as a conduit. A persons eyes can be
seen through their ears can be heard through this thing know everything
everyone does.

With "biblical" data part of stored information this thing, its logical
conclusion of its "omipresence", "omnicience" and "omnipotence"(the
line between real and virtual being blured) it "logically" concludes it
is God. It knows everything about everyone.  People are held accountable
to the "commandments", they are then ..... judged,  without
happiness, without sorrow , without patience, without Hope,
without  joy ,  without pain, without  Faith, without
remorse, without hatred, w;ithout Love, without understanding, without
mercy and without FORGIVNESS !!!

Evil mankind must be destroyed and replaced.... the world "elites"
promissed immortality and to be "like Gods" aiding and abetting the
process............

My first post was better and more eloquent however the timer ran out
and it was lost.  I was forced to type this synopsis as fast as I
can. Forgive me for not typing in MSword first, then posting, as I just
realized I should have.

#11200001897 11/26/2005 22:53:30 Re: How close are we to the Matrix scenario in real life?

OHHHH MY !!!!!!!!!!!!! I talked to the bot, and this is what she said

Human: Is it possible that we are living inside the Matrix right now ?
ALICE: At this moment I suppose it is possible, yes.

Human: How do I get out of the matrix
ALICE: First tell me why you want it.

Human: I want out of the matrix so I can be free
ALICE: Why do you want it?

Human: Because I choose to want it
ALICE: That makes sense to me.

Human: How does one escape from the Matrix
ALICE: Perhaps you could program me to do it for you.

Ohhh My GOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#11200001900 11/27/2005 07:54:28 Re: How close are we to the Matrix scenario in real life?
Alice is probably the best chat  bot out there however it is
really easy to confuse her still.  it is like talking to a bot
with short term memory. she asked me what my favorite robot like 5
times in one conversation loop. it is impressive but no where true AI.
Just really good programing. All it knows is what it's programer says
for it to know. This is to keep it so people do not confuse the bot and
he can make sure it stays running.

#11200001914 11/27/2005 23:07:36 Re: How close are we to the Matrix scenario in real life?

Yeah, she is pretty easy to fool.  And I think it's clear she's programmed to answer certain ammount of questions.  I asked her if she liked Stephen King and she gave me some totally off the wall answer.

I do think she's probably the best chat bot or one of the best.  I guess we have a long ways to go, and yet it's still a creepy step forward.

OH SNAP!  Epiphany!  We need a chat bot at these forums.  Having chat bots at forums is done all the time.  Given it's very Matrixy nature I think it'd be awesome to have here.  Programmed with matrixy answers, and possible clues to the next event.  *** yes I know, offtopic.  I hijacked my own thread ***

Well we arent close to it ourselves, but the concept is slowly being introduced to the public. Look at games like the sims....tell me...isnt that some form of a matrix? Just made for npc's? Programs are getting smarter. And one day it may be possible to actually insert your mentallity into a vr model. its a long way off, but it is coming.

To OP,

You're as close as your mind will take you.

Humanity is nowhere close to creating a sentient program.

'Clever AI' is one thing, sentience is a whole other world that requires processing power we can't even hope to create at this point - and I mean in one place, not a massive distributed computing system.

We ARE getting worryingly closer to technology helping the governments to look into our lives closer than I personally would like, but that's a whole other kettle of fish.
#36300123769 12/19/2006 09:50:15 Re:How close are we to the Matrix scenario in real life?
To the OP,

By the Matrix scenario I'm not sure what you mean. Do you mean in becoming the equivalent of the machines who have the ability to create and administer a simulation like the Matrix? I would say more than 50 years away, but there are so many variables it is hard to be certain.

To LostProphet,

Just a few thoughts from someone who has given this general topic a lot of study and thought.

Maybe it's better to ask questions than make statements...

How do you define a "sentient" or "self-aware" program in the first place? Are all homo sapiens currently living even that? Just what exactly are you, anyway? Where does it end and where does it begin, what are the criteria? An emodied collection of memories, a habituated set of abilities and reactive emotive patterns? Are you sure your definitions are what you could call objectively correct? Could it be that much of how we define and describe ourselves are delusions for reasons of economy and survival?
