Clothing found on the floor...?!?!?

While running a mission yesterday with another redpill, we found a Clothing Box in an elevator!
I picked it up and got enhanced lvl47 gloves.

My question: How could this have happened? I tried to lay them back on the floor, but got the message that i cannot place items in the world...

Any ideas or just a glitch in the system?
