6. We can only satisfy our needs by satisfying the pictures in our ideal world.
Redivider.

The features must be a perfect match to the others to avoid risking notice. Clean cut, sharp appearance. Appropriate body type. Perhaps a slight devilish look for flair. So as to look ordinary, yet exceptional.

She’s erratic. Unstable. Undependable. Thus is her nature. But she’s the only way we’ll be getting any of the necessary information before they start. Time to suit up and move out.

Effective modeling and design of agents in emergent swarms is greatly facilitated by identifying distinct “roles,” or patterns of behavior, that agents can “play” in different mission settings. A role is a class that defines a normative behavioral repertoire of an agent. Roles provide both the building blocks for agent social systems and the requirements by which agents interact. Each agent is linked to other agents by the roles it plays by virtue of the system’s functional requirements—which are based upon the expectations that the system has of the agent. The static semantics of roles, role formation and configuration, and the dynamic interactions among roles have been examined closely and an initial axiomatization has been proposed. However, little work has been on formalizing the temporal aspects of dynamic role assisgnment. Role modelers refer only informally to actions such as “taking on a role”, “playing a role”, “changing roles”, and “leaving roles.” The ambiguities inherent in those terms pose difficulties for applications such as ours, in which dynamic role change is a pervasive feature of the system’s behavior. To understand these issues better, we distinguish two aspects to a change in role. Role classification gives an agent the methods necessary to execute the behaviors in a role. Role activation captures the sense that an agent is currently executing in a role. Dynamic classification refers to the ability to change the classification of an entity. Consistent with the proposed axiomatization, we insist that each agent have at least one role at all times. Dynamic classification deals with adding additional roles or removing roles beyond the minimum of one. This requirement is analogous with the notion that every human must play the “person” role, whatever other roles they may have. In the case of humans, this minimal role persists throughout the agent’s life. It is conceivable that an artificial agent might begin with the minimal role A, add role B, then remove role A, leaving it with the minimal role B. Whether such a fundamental redefinition of the agent is possible will depend on such features as physical equipment associated with the agent and the nature of the platforms on which the agent can run. An alternative approach is to define a basic role AgentId that belongs to every agent, whatever other roles it may play. Having AgentId as a role is a controversial point. However, “role” is defined as a class that defines a normative behavioral repertoire of an agent. The basic class AgentId defines the normative behavioral repertoire for agenthood. To become an instance of a given role, the agent is classified as an instance of, or occupies, that role. Once classified, the agent occupies the new role and possesses all of its features. In the opposite process, if an agent is declassified, it is removed as an instance of a particular role—and no longer occupies the role nor possesses features unique to that role. Agent instantiation and deletion are limiting cases of changes in classification, and we describe their consequences at the role level with create and delete operators. In addition to changing roles over time, an agent may have multiple roles that apply to it at any one moment, a condition that we describe as multiple classification. Role activation seeks to capture the intuition that an agent may hold multiple roles concurrently while not actively executing them at the same instant. Formalizing such a notion of “activity” is problematic. In some sense, even a quiescent agent that is waiting for a message or some signal to awaken could be considered active in its role, because alertness can be thought of as activity. It is necessary to distinguish between user-defined actions and fundamental system actions such as invocation and data flow.
sic semper tyrannis meaning thus always to tyrants
Although increasing the stimulus intensity can increase the rate of firing, there is an upper limit to the number of nerve impulses per second that can be conducted down an axon. This limit occurs because of a property of the axon called the refractory period, the interval between the time one nerve impulse occurs and the next one can be generated in the axon. Because the refractory period for most neurons is about 1 ms, the upper limit of a neuron’s firing rate is about 500 to 800 impulses per second.

Great men are not always wise.
Mistakenly idolized, iconified by association through their adoration for one or another. Of all the horses to bet on, the blind leading the blind. Why follow a cracked egg over the wall? No sense in beating a dead horse, even if you knew where it was. All the water in the world won't make it drink. Losers, weepers. Peace will only increase the probability of a hostile destabilization.
Most never truly believed him dead, allowing a marvelous method for manipulating their multiple hopes and dreams.
Anome was pod-born. But something was wrong with his Mother. She didn’t buy the Matrix. She new it was unreal. But she mistakenly thought all the people in it were unreal, too. Including her son – Anome. She’d talk to him sometimes as if he were a spy, inhuman, a device. She’d contrive to hurt him in a deniable way – “accidentally” dropping him, letting him touch the stove burner, or fall off a porch. His screams meant nothing.

They say a bluepill detective is sniffing around for us. Hot on the trail of some "dangerous criminal", no doubt. Agents hired him to look for Jackie boy? Surely seeking to stop the subterfuge and subversive study of the sheep. What do you say, throw a dog a bone? Some dopey delight to satisfy the masses? Haven't dusted off our Keats for awhile.

Early Human-Robot History

In other legal realms, the rapid spread of computers is already permitting the formation of contractual obligations among machines. A simple example is found in many supermarkets today. The checkout registers are minicomputers linked to the stores’ central computer, which registers a reduction in inventory every time a purchase is made. When stock levels reach the re-order point, the machine automatically telephones a supply warehouse and orders what it judges to be the most economical quantity. Typically the supply warehouse is a separate legal entity. Thus the computers have made a simple contract among themselves. The only communication between buyer and seller is a series of electronic impulses containing information intelligible only to the computers which receive it.
If we give rights to intelligent machines, either robots or computers, well also have to hold them responsible for their own errors. Robots, by analogy to humans, must conform to a reasonable computer standard. Sentient computers and their software should be held to the standard of competence of all other data processing systems of the same technological generation. Thus, if all sixth generation computers ought to be smart enough to detect bogus input in some circumstances, then, given that circumstance, a court will presume that a sixth generation computer knew or should have known the input data were bogus.
Exactly who or what would be the tortfeasor in these cases? Unlike a living being whose mind and body are inseparable, a robots mind (software) and body are severable and distinct. This is an important distinction. Robot rights most logically should reside in the mechanisms software (the programs executing in the robots computer brain) rather than in its hardware.
This can get mighty complicated. Robots could be instantly reprogrammed, perhaps loading and running a new software applications package every hour. Consider a robot who commits a felony while running the aggressive “Personality A” program, but is running mild-mannered “Personality M” when collared by the police. Is this a false arrest? Following conviction, are all existing copies of the criminal software package guilty too, and must they suffer the same punishment? (Guilt by association?) If not, is it double jeopardy to take another copy to trial? The robot itself could be released with its aggressive program excised from memory, but this may offend our sense of justice.
If robots are persons, will the Fifth Amendment protect them from self-incrimination? Under present law, a computer may be compelled to testify, even against itself, without benefit of the Fifth Amendment. Can a warrant be issued to search the mind of a legal person? If not, how can we hope to apprehend criminals in a world of electronic funds transfer?
How should deviant robots be punished? Western penal systems assume that punishing the guilty body punishes the guilty mind, invalid for computers whose electromechanical body and software mind are separable. What is cruel and unusual punishment for a sentient robot? Does reprogramming a felonious computer person violate constitutional privacy or other rights?
Robots and software persons are entitled to protection of life and liberty. But does life imply the right of a program to execute, or merely to be stored? Denying execution would be like keeping a human in a permanent coma, which seems unconstitutional. Do software persons have a right to data they need in order to keep executing?
Can robot citizens claim social benefits? Are unemployed robo-persons entitled to welfare? Medical care, including free tuneups at the government machine shop? Electricity stamps? Free education? Family and reproductive rights? Don't laugh.
According to a prominent sociologist and futurist, the advent of robots with sexual-service capabilities and simulated skin will create the potential for marriage between living and nonliving beings in the near future. For very lonely people, human-like robots that don't age and can work nonstop could become highly desirable as marriage partners for humans. In many instances, such marriages may be celebrated with traditional wedding vows and country club receptions.
In the not too distant future, there may be a day when vociferous robo-lobbyists pressure Congress to fund more public memory banks, more national network microprocessors, more electronic repair centers, and other silicon-barrel projects. The machines may have enough votes to turn the rascals out or even run for public office themselves. One wonders which political party or social class the robot bloc will occupy.
In any case, the next time that Coke machine steals your dollars, better think twice before you kick it. Someday you may need a favor.

Can a program experience rage? Is that too base and primal and simple an emotion to be recreated in a program? Programs can experience feelings and desires of jealousy, greed, revenge, betrayal, despair; complex causal emotions that effect outcomes generated from specific stimuli. Programs can experience anger. Annoyance over an interference or obstacle. But rage?

Trans was responsible, though more indirectly than suspected. His debriefing of the incident with the Muse, long dormant in Zion’s files, resurrected by librarian or liaison. No sense crying over spilled milk. How can we turn this knowledge of her to our favor?

The human preoccupation with social gatherings - parties, raves, dances, sockhops, keggers, masquerades – has caught our attention for the moment. For most, it represents a period of ultimate inefficiency. Idle talk, brief interactions with others (either physical or verbal), dancing (of course). Dancing is a particularly peculiar endeavor. Erratic bodily gyrations set to music. While it is a mating tool for some, it serves no conceivable purpose for most. Of course, there is no reason we can’t get jiggy with it now and then. For some, these events represent a prelude to the selection of a mate, either temporary or semi-permanent. For others, they are merely a temporary distraction and deviation from the tedium of the norm. We have received many invitations since our rise to infamy. We grudgingly accepted once... an anniversary party for The Watchmen. It was not without its moments. Who else can do the robot so readily?
